VOLUNTEER CROSSING GUARDS NEEDED
Peace Lutheran Church in Coon Rapids will be an open site for free lunches for kids this summer. The lunches will be provided by the Anoka-Hennepin School District in partnership with the MN Dept. of Education and the US Dept. of Agriculture. Any child up to age 18 will receive a free lunch if they arrive at Peace between 12:00-1:30pm, Monday-Thursday, June 29-August 27. Because Peace will be the only open site in all of Anoka County, we have been told to expect 100-200 kids to attend each day. Many or most of these children will arrive on foot or by bike, unaccompanied by parents.
Peace is located on the corner of Northdale Blvd. NW (109th) and University Avenue, a very busy and hazardous intersection. We are seeking volunteers age 15 and older to serve as crossing guards in both directions to help children trying to cross. Peace will supply safety vests and crossing signs for two volunteers per day.
Individual Explorer posts are encouraged to volunteer to staff one day per week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) for the first session, June 29-July 30. Posts would recruit two volunteers from their group to work from 11:45am-1:45pm on their day for five weeks. Additional posts would volunteer to staff one day per week for the second session, August 3-2 7 (four weeks).

Childhood hunger is a serious problem in our communities, especially in the summer when schools are closed. Summer Lunch Bunch is an exciting partnership between organizations that are dedicated to feeding hungry kids. I hope the Explorer Posts affiliated with the Northern Star Council will choose to be part of this partnership.
